I read the description of this book and knew I would HAVE to read it. I was not disappointed!

I was immediately sucked in to Avery's character. I loved her from the very first paragraph. She was so sweet and vulnerable, but had found a way to fight against the chaos in her life. Having been ridiculed as a child bc I wore glasses, I understand this, but the level that Avery has to deal with is beyond my comprehension. My heart went out to her and I wanted to slay demons with her, but she has a good network with her mother and her best friend, who chose her early on.

Avery is constantly berated for her scar that she wears on her face and there is one person in particular who is relentless. One day someone in her life steps out of character and speaks to her. She has no idea if it is a ruse or real. How do you put faith in someone who has stood by and watched you be walked all over for years?? What path would I choose? It is a question for the ages.

I look forward to reading more from Elizabeth Montgomery and especially I long for her to develop this novella into a longer read. I really want to read more about how Avery and Daniel first met, how her enemy has lived at home, how her mother came about having Avery, etc.

Goodreads Description: For those of us who come into the world different, we see it for what it really is.
Harsh.
Avery Chamberlin is special, unique. Beautiful words to gloss over the fact that she is different. She has never felt like she fit in. Why should she?
She was reminded on a daily basis that she was not like her peers.
Flawed. Damaged. A freak.
Avery will have to come out of her shell to prove that even the bullies have their own insecurities.
LIFE ISN’T ABOUT LABELS

Book Review: Z Chronicles by Ann Christy

If you have followed my blog you know I am a HUGE FANGIRL of Ann Christy and I was so lucky to meet and speak with her in person at the recent UtopyaCon (now Utopia). She is an amazing writer and I just love reading her books like Strikers. So knowing she was one of the authors on this anthology of zombie stories, I knew I would love them

Ann Christy's short story in Z Chronicles starts out like a normal end of the world story. There are people who have survived the zombie apocalypse as they have paid to get into a very prestigious biosphere-like arena. She explains the established criterion and how the classes are maintained within the walls. She goes on to say that some people have gotten a better deal than other. The ending is so sick and twisted that I actually found myself laughing and thinking, "good job Ann Christy!" I did not expect her to take the story in the direction that she did. Really fun.

Goodreads Description: Z. Among the most monstrous creations of our imaginations, the zombie terrifies with its capacity to pursue its prey unrelentingly, to run it down, exhaust it to surrender.

In this title in the acclaimed Future Chronicles series of speculative fiction anthologies, fourteen authors confront that nightmare, that horrific mirror of ourselves turned base, soulless, and hungry.

Book Review: I, Zombie by Jo Michaels

Title: I, Zombie
Author: Jo Michaels
Publisher: Jo Michaels
Publish Date: Jan 8 2014
300 pages, ebook

Goodreads

This is the perfect kind of zombie book I want to read. It is light, fun, sad, happy, gross but not totally off the cuff gag me and still has life (pun intended).

I, Zombie was actually believable which I always look for in a book. If I am going through my day and expect to see the characters come around the corner, this is a good book. I completely got sucked in and read this book in a day. A DAY! This is a good book. I wanted to call in sick to work just to finish it. Thankfully that was unnecessary.

Trixie was a sweet, funny, smart and lovable character who is lucky to have the life family and friends she does, but she does not take it for granted. She uses this to her advantage and keeps them in contact, takes their advice and tries to listen to her heart. Jo takes through the pain of Trixie eating her dog (no spoilers, it is in the description) and then having to live with it.

My favorite part of the book and there were many, has to be that Jo takes us through the beginning. Most zombie books skip past how people go infected, how it spread and how the real people deal with the changes. I loved this. I really liked and rooted for the zombies in this book, but I also hoped for understanding and a resolution with humans. And yes, I am a reader who loves a happy ending, but you never know with a zombie book. It can end in worse catastrophe or resolution. Jo kept me guessing the entire time.

The question it leaves me with is would I do the same as Trixie, would I allow myself physical pain in order to communicate with strangers to save them? Would I risk my life to save others? Would I reach out to lose my life and those I love, to save the human/zombie race?

Goodreads Description: It's the end of the world as we know it.

Trixie Collins is a normal teen making her way through high school. One night at a party, a boy comes on to her and won't take no for an answer. As she jerks her arm away, his fingernails cut into her skin.

When she finds her dog's mutilated body and realizes she's to blame, she starts to think maybe the zombie apocalypse they've been screaming about on the news isn't a hoax after all. Worse, she begins to think maybe she's one of the infected.

Now it's a fight for life as she joins together with her brethren to stop the humans intent on destroying them. Are zombies all bad, or is it just a huge misunderstanding?

UtopyaCon 2015 hangover

I am EXHAUSTED! But so inspired and so ready to get my sh*t together. This is ALL bc of the wonderful people at Utopya that I met, spent time with, talked to, listened to, got autographys from, shared a room with, danced and sang with, got on stage with, got Pitched Slapped by and pitched a few ourselves. Seriously the most amazing place I have been truly bc the people that attended were amazing. They are totally my people.

I fit in! From a life of trying to feel like I belonged, and yes, if you know me, you know I am not a shy person, but deep down that kid who was ostracized, made fun of, told I was not good enough, not pretty enough, not smart enough. It has taken a long time in life to find my comfortable place, but that inner nerd still gets scared. No matter how many trade shows, networking meetings, lunches, etc., I go to I still get scared, nervous and worried I will be struck down.

At Utopya 2015, I was embraced by each and every person; author, blogger, reader, friend, family, daughter, etc. It was such a special place with wonderful people. Being in a convention with a bunch of wallflowers, I was one of the more outspoken people and I swore I would never let anyone eat alone or remain on the outside of a group.

I think the highlight, and there were many, was the morning I was walking by the tables in the lobby, happened to glance down and see a nametage. I kept walking and not a moment later, the name was screaming in my head

I backed up, looked at her nametag again and then took deep breaths to not go all fangirl on her. For the next hour, I was blessed to meet and speak with Katie McGarry and her dear friend, Collette Ballard. We had the most amazing down to earth, learn from our experiences, funny and inspiring time. I missed the panel I was scheduled to go to, but never once was I disappointed. Best hour of the convention.

Another highlight was the Doubts Panel where authors opened up to vulnerability and spoke out against the doubts of being a writer, seeing the white screen, thinking we may not be good enough. Many of these doubts, majority of them come from within! The room was filled with emotions and many tears fell. I was blessed to be a part of this panel where honesty came to the surface and led us to knowledge.

My roomies were awesome! I had never met any of them. It worked out to where Elisabeth and I were the early birds and Hope and Shelley were the night owls. It was fun to have a friend to look to for comfort when I was tired and ready to turn in and also to greet for breakfast in the morning. Then the night owls would greet us later and catch up on how their evening went. It was so funny to see our room fill up with books, hear the massively awesome stories of fangirl moments and hear how we all read and write.

I met a new friend for life in my own city who rode with me and flew with me to and from the Con. Karen was so sweet, fun and inspiring.

I wish I could list all the beautiful moments I had with these amazing people, but I would be afraid to forget someone. I met the most amazing women who were like sisters from the get-go, women who got my sense of wrong and just before I crossed the line of crazy humor, women who were beyond kind and sweet and warm, women who knew when to tell me to get serious and write, women who gave me info that I have been craving for years on editing, internships, time management, etc. I just cannot say enough about this group.

Okay so the dance party the last night was EPIC! So epic. We sang all the lyrics to the songs, danced til my feet hurt, went from group to group to jam, laughed and pointed at the awesome pictures, took pictures with funny and beautiful women. It was just too much fun. A wonderful way to say goodbye and hello to all the new friends I met.

My booklist is truly staggering at this point. I am a little worried I may not be able to meet all the commitments, to myself and others, but I refuse to let those DOUBTS enter and take over. RAGE AGAINST THE DYING OF THE LIGHT! I will set my own goals of writing weekly, sending my mom for edits, look in to internships for editing, add classes to learn even more about editing and still find the time to read, blog and review bc my heart requires it. My main goal is to have a book, on paper (or computer) complete by the next Utopya. It can be long before any major edits have occurred, but it has to be out from my brain and down on paper. In order to achieve this massive goal, I need to stay focused. These people at Utopya have shown, told and explained how I can do it. And Kim Holden was kind of enough to share LIFE SHOULD BE EPIC. And refuse to not allow this to be in my life. I will make time for that which is important to me - writing.

Thank you UptpyaCon 2015!

Excerpt
Chapter One
Robin

Maybe I could call in sick. With something fatal. Something so contagious the entire high school would contract it just by looking at me. Was there such a thing? I took out my phone. “Okay, Google. What is visual contagion?”
“Good morning, Robin.”
For half a second I thought my phone had learned my name. And had started speaking in my mom’s voice? I entered the kitchen and found Mom in her pink bathrobe with the tea stain down the front, waiting for me. She must’ve heard me talking to my phone.
“Morning.” I set my messenger bag by the back door and took a seat at the kitchen bar.
Google had only come up with only one direct hit and was now blinking at me, waiting for something that would challenge its storage banks. The ‘contagion’ it presented wasn’t even a disease. It was some company in Vancouver that spread positive messages on organic hemp or bamboo T-shirts. Great. I ask for science, I get hippies.
“Do you think Visual Contagion would be a good name for a band?” I asked Mom as I scrolled through a few of the t-shirt pictures.
“Hmm,” Mom said, tapping her fingernail against her teacup. “A band that plays music?”
My turn to sit and blink. “What other kind is there?”
“Plenty. A wrist band. Hairband. Wedding band. Waistband.”
“Okay, okay.” She’d go on and on and then open the thesaurus app on her tablet if I didn’t stop her. “I’m a guy. I don’t think about hairbands or jewelry. Yes, I meant a band that plays music.”
“Then I’d say no. Visual Contagion, great a name as it is, would not work for a musical group.” She took a sip of her tea, Irish breakfast according to the tag hanging from the string, as she contemplated. “Auditory Contagion could work. Audio? Audial?”
Auditory Contagion would indeed be a damn cool name for a band. Almost made me want to form one. Except I couldn’t play a single instrument. Not even that plastic flute-thing they made us play in elementary school. Maybe I could compose something on my computer. I needed music for my video game anyway.
“Okay, Google. Popular music software.”
“Would you like some breakfast?” Mom asked. “Or are you just going to play with your phone until it’s time to leave?”
My mom wasn’t the most domestic person. She did like to feed people though, and when she took the time to make an actual meal, she was a great cook.
I set my phone in my lap and analyzed my hunger level. “Juice and toast with butter and jam. Two slices.”
“Two? You’re hungry today. What kind of tea?” She held up her Irish breakfast to me with a questioning look and wiggled the box as if that would lure me to the Celtic side.
“English breakfast, please. With cream and two sugar cubes.”
“Off to the range,” my dad said as he entered the kitchen and set a black case—smaller than a briefcase, larger than a lunchbox—on the gray marble counter.
“Before work?” Mom asked.
“I don’t have any meetings until ten today. I want to try out my birthday present.”
Who knew a guy could get so excited over a handgun? Then again, this one did have a built-in laser. Guns weren’t my thing, but if presented with a laser-operated piece of technology I’d be all over it. So, I could understand his enthusiasm to a point.
“Want to come with me, Robin?” Dad asked as he plugged the first of two coffee pods into the machine to fill his travel mug.
“Thanks, but I do have a meeting before ten,” I said. “I have that test first thing.”
“Finally,” Dad said. “I don’t understand the holdup on allowing you to take a placement test. You studied?”
“Of course he studied,” Mom said as though nothing could be more unthinkable than me not studying.
“I did,” I told them. “Don’t worry, I’ll pass.”
“They should put him directly into Calculus and Differential Equations,” Dad said.
“He could handle it,” Mom agreed, “but AP Calculus will be an easy A for him.”
“Good point,” Dad said and clapped me on the back, nearly knocking me off my stool. “Build that killer GPA. Get into the college of your choice and academic scholarships as well.”
“Don’t pressure him,” Mom said, setting a plate with my buttered and jammed toast on the placemat in front of me.

Bio
Shawn McGuire is the author of young adult novels that blend contemporary settings and issues with a touch of fantasy and magic. She started writing after seeing the first Star Wars movie (that's episode IV) as a kid. She couldn't wait for the next movie to come out so wrote her own episodes. Sadly, those notebooks are long lost, but her desire to write is as strong now as it was then.
Her books deal with harder topics (death of a sibling, divorce, dating violence, bullying, and teen suicide) because she believes it is important to talk about these things. Those kinds of topics can be hard to handle and a bit overwhelming, so she infuses a bit of humor in her work as well because she also believes that a sense of humor can help you get through just about anything.

Shawn lives in Colorado with her family where she spends her time reading, cooking and baking, practicing yoga and meditation, and hiking and camping in the spectacular Rocky Mountains.
