Stacking The Shelves #141/Sunday Post #73

Stacking The Shelves is hosted by Tynga's Reviews and Reading Reality as a way to share all the books we got during the week!

The Sunday Post is hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Reviewer. Its a weekly post to showcase what books you got, recap the week, and talk about what will be coming up this week on the blog!

So the boyfriend bought me some books and I'm so excited. I finally got Defy Me! Ahhhh. We all know the Shatter Me series is one of my all time faves. So I'm thrilled I finally have Defy Me! And I'm seriously excited about We Hunt The Flame!

Thanks to NetGalley and Dundurn Press!

So as you guys know I listened to the audiobooks of the first two books last year and really enjoyed them. And now I have both the third and surprisingly fourth books from the library. Definitely was not expecting A Map of Days to not have any holds on it this soon.

This week has actually been pretty decent with reading. I finished The Girl The Sea Gave Back by Adrienne Young. The review is scheduled to go up in two weeks. I really enjoyed it! I also listened to the audiobook of The Crown's Game by Evelyn Skye. I kinda just decided to pick this up on a whim after a few booktubers had talked about the audiobook in their vlogs. And I enjoyed the audiobook of it as well. So far as of this going up (Saturday Morning), I'm on book 3 for the reading rush. Soul of the Sword by Julie Kagawa. I tried reading more but ended up doing other stuff. But I plan on making a big push Saturday and Sunday. I want to finish at least 5 books. So since I'm already into book 3, I don't feel like it would be too hard to finish 2 more over the course of the weekend.

Review: The Crown's Game by Evelyn Skye

The Crown's Game (The Crown's Game #1)
Author: Evelyn Skye
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Publication Date: May 17, 2016
Pages: 407
Format: Audiobook/Library

Vika Andreyeva can summon the snow and turn ash into gold. Nikolai Karimov can see through walls and conjure bridges out of thin air. They are enchanters—the only two in Russia—and with the Ottoman Empire and the Kazakhs threatening, the tsar needs a powerful enchanter by his side.

And so he initiates the Crown’s Game, an ancient duel of magical skill—the greatest test an enchanter will ever know. The victor becomes the Imperial Enchanter and the tsar’s most respected adviser. The defeated is sentenced to death.

Raised on tiny Ovchinin Island her whole life, Vika is eager for the chance to show off her talent in the grand capital of Saint Petersburg. But can she kill another enchanter—even when his magic calls to her like nothing else ever has?

For Nikolai, an orphan, the Crown’s Game is the chance of a lifetime. But his deadly opponent is a force to be reckoned with—beautiful, whip-smart, imaginative—and he can’t stop thinking about her.

And when Pasha, Nikolai’s best friend and heir to the throne, also starts to fall for the mysterious enchantress, Nikolai must defeat the girl they both love…or be killed himself.

As long-buried secrets emerge, threatening the future of the empire, it becomes dangerously clear—the Crown’s Game is not one to lose.

Review: I enjoyed this. I listened to the audiobook for it and I feel like I enjoyed it more because of that. I really enjoyed that this took place in Russia. While there are a fair amount of book out or coming out now that take place there, there is't nearly as many as books that take place in say the US or Europe. So I really enjoyed it. And I loved it even more since it specifically revolved around the Romanov family. I absolutely love books set around the Romanov's! So one reason why I definitely feel like the audiobook let me enjoy this book more was because of the accents and the pronunciations. Being able to really hear more of a Russian accent and having the Russian names and places said aloud definitely helped me get more into the setting and really feel fully immersed in the story. So I highly suggest the audiobook when it comes to reading this!

So the whole idea behind The Crown's Game was incredibly interesting. Normally, only one person gets the powers of an enchanter. And this person becomes the Tsar's Imperial Enchanter. However, during some generations, the enchanters power is given to two people and the two enchanters have to fight in The Crown's Game to win the place of Imperial Enchanter. So we have Vika and Nikolai who have the enchanter powers and have to fight in The Crown's Game. They were both raised and mentored in completely different ways and have different strength's going into the game.

I thought it was really interesting seeing them use their differing talents to attempt to kill the other. We see Vika try to use a lightning storm or drowning in water to kill Nikolai while he tries to suffocate her to death in a box. Their powers were so different from each other, so it was interesting to see what they attempted with each turn. It was also interesting seeing their dynamic with each other change as they got to know the other. Not only do we see Vika and Nikolai start to soften and even fall for each other throughout The Crown's Game, which obviously has a significant impact on the game itself. We see Pasha the heir to the thrown make things more complicated for the game as well. He is falling for Vika as well but on the flip side, Nikolai is his best friend. He doesn't necessarily want to see either of them die from the game.

On top of The Crown's Game happening, we also have all this stuff happening in the background. We see Pasha dealing with the fact he's not super thrilled about becoming Tsar and dealing with all the diplomatic stuff, including potential uprisings against the throne. Both Vika and Nikolai get some startling news about their parentage. Vika about her father, and Nikolai about both his mother and father. I have to say the whole thing with Nikolai was more shocking. I was not expecting his mother to actually be a part of the book considering what we were told at the beginning about her. But her role and what she reveals about Nikolai's previously unknown father was surprising for me. And then on top of that, we learn about all these affair's Tsar Alexander had and even suspected affairs of the Tsarina as well. Clearly both of these things lead to the events happening in The Crown's Fate according to the description. There were just so many background stories happening during the main story and that definitely made things a lot more interesting.

The only thing I wasn't the biggest fan of was how so many people loved the main characters. The whole Nikolai and Vika falling for each other was super predictable with the way the story was written. To me they never truly felt like enemies. I mean, we know from the synopsis that it happens, but it just felt super predictable and obvious with how. And the whole Pasha falling for Vika too definitely felt a bit predictable as well. He was pretty starstruck with her the moment he saw her. And if that wasn't enough, the person who was pretty much Nikolai and Galina's servant, Renata, also declares her love for Nikolai. Cuz the whole Vika, Nikolai, Pasha thing wasn't enough. The ending with what Nikolai tried to initially do to end the game also felt predictable. I saw that coming a mile away.

However, despite the predictability of certain parts of the story, overall, I really liked it. I'm excited to see where some of these story lines and twists take us in the next book!

My Reading Rush TBR

The Reading Rush (previously BookTubeAThon) is a week long readathon for book lovers all around the world. For one week readers gather together to read as much as they possibly can and to participate in challenges and giveaways online.

So I thought about participating last year, but just didn't get around to actually doing it. So I absolutely decided I was definitely going to do it this year! I'm really excited! If anyone else is participating, add me as a friend on the website! Here's my profile! :D

Now, to get to my TBR. So I'll do it in order of the challenges.

Challenge #1: Read A Book With Purple On The Cover
My Pick:

Challenge #2: Read A Book In The Same Spot The Entire Time
My Pick:
So I originally was gonna combine this challenge with #3 but I got approved for this this past week and decided since I read Ignite The Stars pretty quickly, that I'd insert this in for this challenge.

Challenge #3: Read A Book You Meant To Read Last Year
My Pick:
So this wasn't my original pick, but I'm really in the mood to read it so since I never got to it in November, I figured this would be perfect.

Challenge #4: Read An Authors First Book
My Pick:

Challenge #5: Read A Book With A Non-Human Main Character
My Pick:
I was torn between this or The Forever Song also by Julie, but I feel I'm more in the mood for Kitsune and Demons over Vampires.

Challenge #6: Pick A Book That Has 5 Or More Words In The Title
My Pick:
While I'm aware I could have used Girls of Paper and Fire for this one and doubled up, I'd rather use it as an excuse to read this cuz I've been DYING to get into it since my wish for it got granted!

Challenge #7: Read and Watch A Book To Movie Adaptation
My Pick:
I've been meaning to reread City of Bone for AGES now so I'm using this as an excuse to do it. Plus the boyfriend brought over the DVD for it so its seriously perfect timing.

Just curious, did any of you notice my ulterior motive with some of my picks?? *cough* 4 out of 7 of them are Netgalley books I need to read and review. *cough* Lol. I was so strategic about that. Readathon and catch up on review books?? Yup, sounds like a good idea!

Stacking The Shelves #140/Sunday Post #72

Stacking The Shelves is hosted by Tynga's Reviews and Reading Reality as a way to share all the books we got during the week!

The Sunday Post is hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Reviewer. Its a weekly post to showcase what books you got, recap the week, and talk about what will be coming up this week on the blog!

Omg! I'm so excited I got approved for this. As you guys know, Ignite The Stars was one of the books that actually surprised me last year. I wasn't really expecting much going into it and I ended up thoroughly enjoying it. So I've obviously been dying to get my hands on Eclipse The Skies! I saw it on NetGalley finally and you best believe I pressed that request button faster than you could say the book title. Lol. Thank you so much Netgalley and Albert Whitman!

GUYSSSSSSSSSS. I finished a book this week finally!!!! :D I finally finished Archenemies!!! Solid 4.5/5 Stars! While the boyfriend was doing some schoolwork I just laid down next to him and punched out the last 100 pages. Yay! I really needed this. After finishing it I really feel more confident that I'm coming out of this slump. And just in time for The Reading Rush to begin. I've posted my TBR post for it, make sure to stop by and see what I'm gonna be reading. So random question/idea. Would anyone be interested in a readathon/readalong whatever you wanna call it, of sorts for all the Shadowhunter books (aka the TMI, TID & TDA series) before the new series comes out next year? I need so badly to catch up on all of the series/short stories, etc, but would love to have some people to do it with! I know I'm not the only one super far behind! LOL.

This weekend should be fun. Me and the boyfriend are planning on doing something for Community Day for Pokemon Go. I usually just walk around the apartment complex since I still haven't been able to get a new car, but since he has a car, we might actually go out. Maybe to one of the parks or one of the malls. Somewhere with a good amount of pokestops (more for him than me, I'm well stocked). LOL. It should be fun though!

Review: Archenemies by Marissa Meyer

Archenemies (Renegades #2)
Author: Marissa Meyer
Publisher: Feiwel & Friends
Publication Date: November 6, 2018
Pages: 474
Format: Hardcover/Own

Time is running out. Together, they can save the world. But are they each other's worst nightmare?

Nova's double life is about to get a lot more complicated:

As Insomnia, she is a full-fledged member of the Renegades, a syndicate of powerful and beloved superheroes. She works with Adrian's patrol unit to protect the weak and maintain order in Gatlon City.

As Nightmare, she is an Anarchist—a group of villains who are determined to destroy the Renegades. Nova wants vengeance against the so-called heroes who once failed her when she needed them the most.

But as Nova, her feelings for Adrian are deepening, despite the fact that he is the son of her sworn enemies and, unbeknownst to Nova, he has some dangerous secrets of his own.

In this second installment of the Renegades trilogy, Nova, Adrian, and the rest of their crew—Ruby, Oscar, and Danna—are faced with escalating crime in Gatlon City, while covert weapons and conflicting missions have Nova and Adrian questioning not only their beliefs about justice but also the feelings they have for each other.

The line between good and evil has been blurred, but what's clear to them both is that too much power could mean the end of their City—and the world—as they know it.

Review: I enjoyed this even more than I enjoyed Renegades! This is such a great sequel and really brings everything to a whole new level. The first thing I wanna point out that I really loved is that my biggest complaint with Renegades was taken away with Archenemies. I felt like there was so many slow parts of Renegades and it could have easily been shortened and Archenemies didn't have that feel. It is shorter than Renegades, but its all good cuz I felt like we were constantly getting things that contributed to the story moving forward. Whether it was something involving the Renegades, the Anarchists, Nova and Adrian's relationship, their feelings about what the council was doing, etc. It gave Archenemies much better pacing for me.

I think one of the things I really loved about the story is that we see Adrian also start to doubt the council like Nova already does after the reveal and implementation of Agent N. Nova of course was immediately disgusted over Agent N's use, but Adrian was also not pleased. We see him struggle with it. While he sees the good that Agent N could do by neutralizing some of the incredibly bad villains, and even voices the good of it being used sometimes, he also sees it as wrong and questions whether it needs to be used against anyone that does wrong or is even classified as a villain. I really feel this is where Adrian starts to see the lines being blurred between right and wrong.

We also see both Adrian and Nova really fight themselves regarding their feelings for each other. Adrian initially fights between whether to pursue Nova and see if she likes him back, and then feels confused cuz he knows she likes him back, but there's so many moments where she doesn't seem to want to pursue anything between them. Nova struggles a lot with this. Obviously because of her being undercover she doesn't want to pursue a relationship with Adrian because she knows it will eventually have to end, but she also really, truly, genuinely likes him. And I feel like we even see her second guess being against the Renegades once or twice being around Adrian and his family and seeing so many of them just being human. Obviously she still defaults back to the Anarchists. But we see glimpses of her doubting thanks to the relationships and bonds she's built.

I thought the ending was definitely interesting for a number of reasons. We see Nova almost get caught a number of times as her Anarchist alias, Nightmare. We see Adrian fall apart because of what happens to Max when Nova is trying to escape Renegades headquarters as Nightmare. We see Adrian's dads realize they should have listened to Adrian and Nova about the doubts about Ace Anarchy's helmet being as secure and impossible to get to as they claimed. We see Adrian finally reveal being the Sentinel to a few of his friends. And we even get a huge shocker regarding Ace which I'm sure is going to play a big role in Supernova! I'm definitely excited to see what Supernova holds for everyone, and will Adrian and Nova please just reveal their secret identities to each other. God lord. I thought we'd get that in Archenemies but nope.

Review: Night Probe by Clive Cussler

Night Probe! (Dirk Pitt #6)
Author: Clive Cussler
Publisher: Bantam
Publication Date: January 1, 1981
Pages: 345
Format: Paperback/Own

In the midst of an international crisis, Heidi Milligan, a beautiful, brilliant American naval commander, accidentally discovers an obscure reference to the long-buried North American Treaty, a precedent-shattering secret pact between the United States and Great Britain. The President believes that the treaty offers the single shot at salvation for an energy-starved, economically devastated nation, but the only two copies plummeted into the watery depths of the Atlantic in twin disasters long ago. The original document must be found—and the one American who can do the job is Dirk Pitt.

But in London, a daring counterplot is being orchestrated to see that the treaty is never implemented. Brian Shaw, a master spy who has often worked hand in hand with American agents, now confronts his most challenging command. Pitt’s mission: Raise the North American Treaty. Shaw’s mission: Stop Pitt.

Review: Night Probe is my second Dirk Pitt novel and I loved this one just as much as I loved Raise The Titanic. I loved how this one still had that intrigue and thrill that Raise The Titanic had, but also had a futuristic feel with the idea that Canada could hold us hostage with a power source. I mean, that was incredibly interesting. And the whole idea of a long lost and covered up treaty between the United States and Great Britain regarding selling Canada to the US. MAN, this book was a freaking ride from beginning to end.

So the whole backstory is that the US is facing an energy crisis because of oil being depleted, but the source of non-oil power for a huge chunk of the US actually come from a plant in Quebec. The North American Treaty was long forgotten until Heidi Milligan stumbles onto a reference of this treaty while researching something else. This then leads to an investigation into what the North American Treaty actually was, and when it's figured out, the President sees it as his shot at salvation to not have to bow down to Canada's demands during the energy crisis.

This was just so thrilling all around. We have two copies of the treaty. One in a shipwreck, one in a train wreck. Both are to be found and explored to potentially find both copies so one might be used. The shipwreck turns out to be a bust. The train-wreck however, well, that opens up a whole other can of worms. The train is not where it was supposed to have gone into a river. Which leads to this whole other mystery Dirk has to solve as to where the train actually went if not in the river. Man, figuring out the train mystery was so thrilling. Going through the events happening at the time the train was thought to go in the river. Tracking down people that might have any knowledge of it. Tracking down areas the train could have been diverted off the tracks before getting to the river and how it would still have seemed like a train went in the river. It was incredibly interesting seeing where the train actually ended up being and figuring out how to actually get to it.

I also thought everything happening in Canada at the same time was incredibly intriguing. Not only do we have all this mystery with the train and finding the treaty documents, but in Canada, they are trying to prevent Quebec from seceding. There's assassination plots, impostors, affairs. I swear, the story of trying to prevent Quebec from seceding was just as thrilling as the plot to find the treaty.

The end was just huge. The US and Canada actually agree to terms regarding the treaty. The talks behind the scenes we find out the US and Canada were having about merging the countries before the treaty even came into play. This definitely is one of my absolute favorite Clive Cussler books to date!

I've been excited to read this for some time now. My hold on the audiobook finally came in this week and I'm dying to get into it!

So I'm finally working on the reviews I've been behind on. And getting more posts scheduled. I swear I am. Lol. This week I officially signed up for The Reading Rush, which used to be the booktubeathon. The hosts decided to change the name and make a website for everybody to interact on to make it more inclusive for everyone outside of Booktube who wanted to do it. I'm super excited for it! If anyone else plans on doing it and wants to add me as a friend, here's my profile
